Itinerary
Día 1
Half day
- Rapa Nui National Park, a wildlife sanctuary that spans most of Easter Island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains about 900 moai sculptures, as well as 300 ahu, or ceremonial platforms, on which are the carved figures. Sculpted from solidified volcanic ash, it is believed that these statues represent the spirits of ancestors and high-ranking members of each tribe.
- After the hotel pick-up from Hanga Roa, we will travel south with our guide to the park to Ahu Tahai, a ceremonial platform that has a unique moai, a stone giant that is alone, but is protected by its more than 4 meters high and its imposing figure.
- We continue north to Puna Pau to see how some moai look different. You will notice that they have pukao or topknots made of red slag on the head. It is believed that volcanic rock was used to impress rival tribes. Approximately 30 pukao are found in or near the Puna Pau quarry, the source of the red slag.
- Then we will go to Ahu Akivi, where you will see a line of seven moai facing the ocean. The moai here are 16 feet (5 meters) tall and weigh approximately 18 tons (16 metric tons). What is the mystery of these figures facing the sea? It is an unusual sight considering that the other ahu moai are facing away from the water. A theory behind their unusual position: these moai symbolize the seven explorers of the Polynesian homeland of Hiva sent by the chief to find the island of Rapa Nui. According to this hypothesis, these statues look at the ocean in the direction they come from.
- Our last point will be The -Ahu Huri to Urenga- one of the 25 platforms that are not on the coast, but inside the island and corresponds to an agricultural area, human settlements.
- After your attractive exploration of ahu moai, you will be taken back to your hotel.
