Cycling through the City of Santiago
- We have taken the best parts of our MORNING and AFTERNOON tour. We have mixed and reorganized them. Here is the best bike tour in the city to get to know Santiago completely in a single day full of fun. Forget about trying to organize your daily itinerary because we did it for you!
- In this adventure on wheels you will discover the culture behind the bohemian streets of Bellavista. Followed by the flavor and colors of the most famous food markets (the three that exist). We will show you our favorite places to enjoy a classic Chilean food.
- Once your meal is completely digested we will visit the wonders of Santiago that put the city in history and travel books. We discuss the important recent story about the Pinochet regime outside of La Moneda. We do all this and there is still time to see the main sites in the center and enjoy life in the parks.
- Our tours are designed to be a cultural cruise without bombarding you with irrelevant information, dates and data. You will not leave this tour with a headache, but with a deep understanding of the city and the motivation to go out and discover more for yourself.
Starting point
- The starting point of this tour is at the office of the Green Bicycle, Loreto 6.
- The tour starts at 9:30 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon.
Itinerary
Día 1
Full Day Cycling through the City of Santiago
Your local guide-guru, who has the knowledge and skills to ride on two wheels, will keep you well informed and equipped since your arrival.
- 09:30 am : We ride in the direction of the bohemian and artistic Barrio Bellavista with its walls full of graffiti. You will pass through colorful cobbled streets to the house of Pablo Neruda, famous Chilean poet and cultural icon. You will have time to enjoy street art and the beautiful architecture of the place.
- 10:00 am : Next stop ... Patronato, immigrant neighborhood of Korea, Peru and the Middle East. You will discover how they have integrated into Chilean culture and the history of why they arrived here in the era of the Ottoman Empire, the Korean War and the economic crises through which the northern countries have passed.
- 10:30 am : Zoom zoom zooooom ... so your bike will be heard while you ride along the north bank of the Mapocho River to La Vega Central, the main market in this area of the city where in addition to fruits and vegetables you can find everything imaginable. It is time to park your “noble steed” and discover the market by walking so you will enjoy even more its aisles full of shops! Then, you will get on your bike again to get to know the south bank of the river until you reach the Central Market, the largest fish and seafood market in the Downtown Santiago area. The Green Bicycle visits these markets since 2008 so the locals will be happy to take a picture with you.
- 12:45 pm : We take a break for lunch! We recommend our favorite places to eat around the office so you can try some well-deserved Chilean food before starting the tour again.
- 02:30 pm : Enjoy a relaxed walk through the Providencia neighborhood. It will not be necessary to step on the pedals hard because the Balmaceda and Bustamante parks are very soft. Your wheels will stop spinning to explain you about the surroundings and to inspire and fill your lungs with the atmosphere you breathe. Surely we will be accompanied by a friendly dog-escort who will follow us for several blocks. PS: We will not forget to tell you why there are SO MANY people kissing and hugging in the parks of Santiago.
- 03:30 pm : Time to wet the shirt a little pedaling through cobblestone streets and some of the bike paths of Santiago. You will understand why the city was chosen as one of the most “bike-friendly” cities in South America. We will visit Plaza Italia and the new Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM). The GAM is located in the ondero Barrio Lastarria / Santa Lucía. Prepare your camera as it is worth taking some photos of the interesting architectural design of the GAM. This neighborhood has many trendy bars so that you can discover and enjoy them later.
- 04:30 pm : We will continue to the Presidential Palace of La Moneda where we will talk about the Military Coup of 1973. While visiting the heart of the Chilean Government you will learn about architecture, history and some historical events that are as fascinating as sad. Fatima Mernissi, commenting on this tour, wrote that: "The trip is about learning, crossing the limits and mastering the fear of strangers, making an effort to understand other cultures and thereby empowering oneself."
- 05:15 pm : We are going back to the Green Office where you can exchange photos, fill your water bottle or use our free wifi. It is also time for you to ask any question to your green guru who at the end of the tour will mark on your map other interesting places to visit.
